ReFrame puts a 6-pigment e-paper display on a digital camera

This open-source camera renders your shots on an e-paper screen and keeps the image visible forever—even when powered off.

Kaloyan Kolev and friends built reFrame, an experimental camera that combines traditional optics with instant e-paper rendering. Built with a Raspberry Pi Zero, a Pi Camera 3, a battery, and a 4-inch six-pigment e-paper display, it takes 15 seconds to shift physical ink particles into place after you press the shutter. The result is a dithered photo that looks halfway between a newspaper halftone and an old video game.

Why it matters: It forces you to slow down and treat every frame as deliberate. Because the screen draws zero power to hold an image, the device doubles as a desk photo frame showing your last shot until you take a new one.

Know this: You can't buy a finished camera yet, but the project is completely open source on GitHub using off-the-shelf components. The camera saves digital versions of both the original and dithered photos to an accessible web dashboard, and the team recently sent prototypes to four professional photographers through APOSSIBLE.

A camera that makes you wait 15 seconds for a photo sounds impractical—until you see it sitting on your desk holding your favorite memory.
