Privacy Policy
upstreamlog (upstreamlog.tech) is a read-only tech news site. You do not need an account to read it, and we never ask for your name, email address, or any other personal details. This page explains the small amount of data that is processed when you visit, why, and what choices you have.
What we collect and why
We collect no personal data directly. Three things happen in the background when you use the site:
- Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which stories are read and how people find the site. It records page views, the referring page, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and your device, browser and operating system. Google Analytics sets cookies (prefixed _ga) to tell returning browsers apart. We do not link this data to any identity, and Google Analytics 4 does not store IP addresses.
- Article view counts. When you open a story, your browser sends a request containing only that story's identifier. Our server adds one to a counter for the story, and to a daily counter that is kept for 30 days, in a database hosted by Upstash. No IP address, cookie, or other identifier is stored with the count.
- Server logs. Our hosting provider, Vercel, processes every request in order to serve the page and protect the site from abuse. That processing can include your IP address and request headers, retained only for a short period under Vercel's own policy. On your first visit we also read the country Vercel derives from your IP address, purely to pick English or Vietnamese. We do not store it.
What is stored in your browser
To remember your preferences, the site keeps a few small values on your own device. None of them identify you, and none are sent to us except the language cookie, which travels with each request so the server can pick the right language.
- ul-lang (cookie, 1 year): the language you chose with the EN/VI toggle. Only set when you press the toggle.
- ul-theme (localStorage): light or dark mode, set when you press the theme toggle.
- ul-viewed (sessionStorage): a flag so each story is counted once per tab session. Cleared when you close the tab.
- Google Analytics cookies (_ga, _ga_*): described above; set only while analytics is active.
What we do not do
- No accounts, sign-ups, newsletters, comments, or contact forms.
- No advertising networks and no tracking pixels of our own.
- No selling, renting, or sharing of visitor data with anyone beyond the service providers listed below.
- Search runs entirely in your browser. Your search text appears only in the page address and is not sent to a search server.
- Fonts are served from our own domain, so no font request reaches Google when a page loads.
Third-party services
These providers process data on our behalf. Each has its own privacy policy:
- Google Analytics · Site analytics (Google LLC).
- Vercel · Hosting and content delivery (Vercel Inc.).
- Upstash · Database that stores the anonymous view counters.
Links to other sites
Stories link to their original sources, and the site links to our channels on X, Threads, Facebook and YouTube. Once you leave upstreamlog.tech, the privacy policy of the site you land on applies. We do not embed third-party players or widgets in our pages.
Our social media accounts
upstreamlog publishes on X, Threads, Facebook and YouTube. Where we use those platforms' developer tools, we use them only to post our own content to our own accounts. We do not request, collect, or store any personal data of people who follow or interact with us on those platforms. Interactions there are governed by each platform's own terms and privacy policy.
Your choices
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works fully without them.
- Clear site data for upstreamlog.tech to remove the language, theme and view flags.
- Google Analytics opt-out add-on · Turns off Google Analytics in your browser on every website.
Data retention and deletion
We hold no personal records to delete: view counts are anonymous totals, and the daily counters expire automatically after 30 days. Google Analytics data is kept under Google's retention settings for our property and is only ever viewed in aggregate. If you believe we hold anything about you, contact us and we will look into it and delete it where it exists.
Children
The site is general tech news and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, children included.
Changes to this policy
If the way the site handles data changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will also be mentioned on our social channels.
