Most humans can plan a lawnmowing route almost as efficiently as a computer without doing any math.

An interactive experiment by The Pudding tracked 30,954 people mowing a virtual grid to see how humans tackle spatial planning. Out of 14,589 unique routes to cover a 49-square lawn, 52% of players finished within five moves of the optimal path, and 16% hit it perfectly. Overall, the median player reached 91% efficiency.

Why it matters: Lawn mowing is a version of Coverage Path Planning — finding the shortest route to cover an area — which links to the famous Traveling Salesman Problem. Checking every possible route for just 20 stops requires testing 2.4 quintillion paths, so computers rely on heuristics — fast problem-solving shortcuts — to get good answers. Humans naturally use similar mental shortcuts, like spotting dead ends early and saving them for last to avoid backtracking.

Know this: Top mowers succeeded because they anticipated traps. Instead of clearing the nearest corner right away, they mowed open spaces first so their path naturally ended at the dead end.
