Parley brings email-style federation to classic IRC

Parley brings email-style federation to IRC without requiring any client plugins.

The open-source project Parley is a decentralized chat network where every team or user runs a server for their own domain. When you send a message to a user on another domain—like typing /msg alice@foo.com—the two servers find each other using DNS, exchange signed JSON messages over HTTPS, and connect on the spot. The frontend stays plain IRC, working out of the box with stock apps like irssi, WeeChat, or Textual.

Why it matters: You get modern perks like cross-device scrollback, shared global channels, and full-text history search without switching to heavy web apps. It gives old-school terminal chat modern federation while keeping the lightweight client you already use.

The project is currently a working proof of concept and is not yet security-hardened for high-stakes production. You can spin up a local test network using the prologic/parley Docker image or the setup scripts in the repository.

Turns out IRC didn't need a total replacement—it just needed smarter backend plumbing.
