Google is setting an expiration date for ChromeOS

ChromeOS is officially on a timer, and its replacement will cost a lot more.

Google updated a support page indicating plans to sunset ChromeOS by 2034, according to a report from Ars Technica. To avoid extending support indefinitely, Google intends to offer a "direct migration" for newer Chromebooks to a new platform called Googlebook OS. While company spokespeople claim Chromebooks will continue to exist, the support page signals the platform's days are numbered.

Why it matters: Schools and businesses run on dirt-cheap Chromebooks that are easy to manage. Googlebook OS won't even have comparable management tools for a year or more, and initial Googlebook hardware starts at $899. If budget devices disappear, price-sensitive organizations will face a tough upgrade path.

Know this: Google hasn't shared a specific migration timeline or a list of eligible models yet.
