Jony Ive's highly anticipated OpenAI hardware collaboration is reportedly a hockey puck-sized smart speaker priced over $300.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, via The Verge, OpenAI and the former Apple design chief are developing a battery-powered, doughnut-shaped device slated for 2027. It is essentially a smart speaker without a screen, featuring a camera system, lights, and moving parts that physically shift when responding to you. Designed to be carried around the home with one hand, it will use an upgraded version of ChatGPT's voice mode for humanlike interactivity.

Why it matters: Dedicated AI hardware has struggled to replace the smartphone, so OpenAI is trying a different angle. By building a portable home assistant with physical movement and sensors, they are betting that conversational AI works better as a tabletop object than a screen in your pocket.
