Anthropic is building its own AI chips

Anthropic is assembling an in-house hardware team to design custom silicon for Claude.

According to Ars Technica, the company plans to co-design future models and hardware side by side. Anthropic previously designed chips alongside outside partners, but it now wants that expertise directly inside the company.

Why it matters: Most AI builders rely heavily on Nvidia for compute infrastructure, creating a strategic bottleneck as demand outstrips supply. Designing custom chips allows for tighter hardware-software integration—a performance edge Anthropic hopes will keep Claude competitive as developers explore running smaller or open-weight models on edge devices.

What to know: Don't expect home-grown Anthropic chips in server racks tomorrow. The company is still hiring key team members, so it will take time before anyone sees the benefits.

Until then, Nvidia remains the main game in town.
