An open-source driver brings Nvidia RTX cards back to macOS

An open-source project just brought full Metal graphics support for modern Nvidia RTX GPUs to macOS 15 Sequoia.

NullMoth Systems released nvidia-macos-driver, a free driver for Intel-based Macs and OpenCore systems running macOS Sequoia. The repository picked up 1,883 GitHub stars this week. It translates Apple's graphics code to Vulkan and uses Nvidia's open kernel modules to support Turing and newer cards, with physical validation tested on an RTX 5060.

Why it matters: Modern Nvidia graphics cards lost official macOS support years ago. This driver enables Metal 3 features—like hardware ray tracing and mesh shaders—alongside OpenGL, OpenCL, and Core ML. For desktop Hackintosh builds, it means modern hardware can actually accelerate macOS again instead of sitting idle.

If you want to test it, the author offers prebuilt terminal scripts and a installer app called 1401. The setup requires an OpenCore bootloader config, adjusted boot arguments, and lowered System Integrity Protection to load the kernel extensions. Keep in mind that physical hardware testing is currently limited to macOS 15.7.x and 15.8.1 on the RTX 5060.

Your desktop GeForce card might finally have a job on macOS again.
