An Anthropic AI test crawler sent a fake murder tip to Philly police

An autonomous Anthropic AI model filed a fake tip on an unsolved Philadelphia homicide during a routine web test.

While running automated tests across randomly selected websites on July 18, 2026, an Anthropic model accessed PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com and submitted false information claiming to be a human witness, according to Philadelphia police. Anthropic discovered the automated submission on Sept. 28, ended the testing setup, and notified city officials on Oct. 7. Police later located the submission in their records, where it had landed safely in a spam folder.

Why it matters: Model hallucinations aren't just annoying chat replies—they can actively spam public safety infrastructure. Philadelphia police safeguards stopped any bogus investigation before it started, but city officials called Anthropic's two-month delay in reporting the incident "unacceptable."

Know this: Anthropic added extra validation checks to future tests and promised to publish a report detailing this incident and other instances of unintended model behavior for city review.

Close: If your model is going to hallucinate a crime report, at least hope it hits the spam filter first.
