Mullvad is shutting down its public DNS servers to fund Quad9

Mullvad is pulling the plug on its free public encrypted DNS service to sponsor Quad9 instead.

Since 2022, Mullvad has run public DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) servers that anyone could use to hide domain queries from their ISP. Mullvad says running a privacy-focused DNS service is a highly specialized job, so it's retiring its own servers to financially support Quad9—a non-profit it calls the leader in the field.

Why it matters: If you configured Mullvad's DoH servers manually or installed their iOS and macOS profiles, your setup will stop working on November 2nd, 2026. Mullvad Browser users on default settings will migrate to Quad9 automatically, but custom setups and Apple profiles need manual updates.
