AMD buys Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2B

AMD just dropped $8.2 billion to buy World Labs, bringing spatial AI straight onto its chip roadmap.

AMD announced it is acquiring World Labs, an AI startup founded by Stanford professor Fei-Fei Li that builds deep learning models to understand physical reality. Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, according to TechCrunch. The deal builds on a partnership the two companies formed last year to optimize training and inference on AMD hardware.

Why it matters: AMD needs to keep up with Nvidia's robotics ecosystem. Nvidia already offers open-weight world models like Cosmos, while AMD previously only offered text and video models. By controlling World Labs, AMD gets the software team it needs to design chips specifically for physical AI and robotics simulation.

Know this: World Labs’ first product, Marble, creates simulated environments to train robots. Synthetic data from these world models is fast becoming mandatory for training general-purpose humanoids and autonomous vehicles.

The acquisition is expected to close before the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval.
