Developers are rebuilding Microsoft Word in pure Rust

Developers are building a clean-room, open-source reimplementation of Microsoft Word entirely in pure Rust.
The ArtCraft team launched WordCraft, an open-source word processor that racked up 3,188 GitHub stars this week. It mirrors the standard Word workflow—ribbon UI, track changes, tables, and mail merge included—and reads and writes .docx files. It runs natively on macOS, Windows, Linux, BSD, and inside web browsers using WebAssembly.
Why it matters: Office software is usually heavy and tied to subscriptions. Rebuilding Word in Rust offers a fast, memory-safe alternative that runs anywhere, while built-in MCP support allows AI agents to inspect and edit .docx files directly.
Here's the gist: WordCraft is open-source under dual MIT and Apache-2.0 licenses, with code and pre-built examples ready to inspect.
Finally, a way to get the ribbon interface without an office subscription.
