Stripe reportedly buys OpenRouter for $7B

Stripe is reportedly buying AI gateway startup OpenRouter for over $7 billion to capture developer spend at the API layer.

According to a Bloomberg report, Stripe has finalized a deal to acquire OpenRouter in what would be its largest acquisition ever. OpenRouter lets developers route tasks across more than 400 AI models through a single access point. The startup raised $113 million at a $1.3 billion valuation in May from backers including Sequoia and Andreessen Horowitz, reaching 8 million users. OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah previously described the startup as "the Stripe for AI." Following earlier reports of acquisition talks in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg reports the final price topped $7 billion. A Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.

Why it matters: Developers want flexibility, not model lock-in. OpenRouter solved this by sitting between software teams and model providers to direct traffic based on cost and capability. By spending over $7 billion, Stripe moves beyond payments to control the main routing layer for AI developer spend.

Know this: OpenRouter gives teams a single API key to swap between hundreds of models without changing integration code.

It turns out the fastest way to become the Stripe for AI is to get bought by Stripe.
