Shopify acquires Tailwind Labs

Shopify is buying Tailwind Labs, bringing the web's default CSS framework under its roof.

Tailwind creator announced the team is joining Shopify after nine years building the project independently. The utility-first framework now sees over 110 million weekly downloads and styles major sites including ChatGPT, Reddit, X, and Cloudflare. The open-source core stays free and MIT-licensed, while Tailwind Labs will stop selling new commercial templates to focus full-time on framework development inside Shopify.

Why it matters: Instead of chasing template sales, the Tailwind team gets permanent backing inside a massive e-commerce network that already relies on their code. For web developers, the core tool stays open-source and free, backed by a parent company heavily invested in its success.

Here's the gist for commercial users: existing customers keep access to paid tools like Tailwind Plus and ui.sh, but new signups are closed so the team can focus entirely on the core framework.

A nine-year side project turned industry standard just found its long-term home base.
