X shuts down open-source frontend Nitter

The last popular way to read X without an account is officially dead.

X sent a formal cease-and-desist letter to the creator of Nitter, targeting the popular open-source privacy-focused alternative Twitter frontend. In response, developer zedeus archived the 13.5k-star GitHub repository on August 25, 2026. Public Nitter instances across the web have now broken entirely, failing with rate-limit errors.

Why it matters: Nitter gave users a clean, lightweight way to read public tweets without an account, ads, or tracking scripts. X has systematically locked down data access over the past year, and this legal action removes one of the last open-source workarounds.

If you rely on bookmarked Nitter instances or third-party web links, they will no longer fetch content.

The era of community-built frontends for X is officially over.
