Four major AI models went down at the exact same time

Users were left stranded Thursday morning as OpenAI, Claude, and Grok suffered a rare, overlapping outage at the exact same time.
Over a period of hours, cloud-based models from OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google all hit service interruptions. Anthropic reported error spikes on Claude models starting at 9:23 a.m. Eastern. OpenAI flagged degraded performance across ChatGPT and Codex at 10:43 a.m., and Grok user complaints on DownDetector jumped from under 10 to 1,365 by 9:45 a.m., according to Ars Technica.
Why it matters: Developers usually treat multi-provider setups as a built-in backup plan. When the major players suffer outages simultaneously, those fallbacks evaporate and automated workflows grind to a complete halt.
Know this: Anthropic and OpenAI resolved their main incident reports by 12:55 p.m. Eastern, while xAI displayed a message that it was working on restoring service.
