Firefox taps Mistral to build a private AI browsing assistant

Firefox is putting open AI models directly into your tabs, and your data stays yours.

Mozilla partnered with Mistral to power Firefox Smart Window (beta), a new browsing assistant. The feature helps you make sense of complex searches, recall pages you clicked away from, and pull information directly from your open tabs. It is rolling out first to users in France and North America, with the UK and Germany following later this year.

Why it matters: Most big browsers push you into a single company's closed ecosystem. Here, Mozilla and Mistral are pairing open distribution with default privacy: conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default, and Mistral agreed to zero data retention.

Know this: Instead of exporting a generic global model, Mistral is fine-tuning these models on regional languages, dialects, and cultural nuances so answers feel native to local users.
